What’s Hustle?
Hustle is a partner dance that originated in NYC during the disco era of the 1970s. It grew out of basement parties, and house jams in the South Bronx, with roots in Latin dances like salsa and mambo, mixed with the energy of swing. What started with Puerto Rican teens vibing in their neighbourhoods grew into a global dance with communities all around the world including a growing Hustle community in the Netherlands. Hustle Dance NL regularly hosts classes and jams in Amsterdam and beyond, connects with international dancers, and continues to support the growth of the Hustle culture and community.
The Notorious IBE is proud to host Hustle for the third year in a row.
What started as a way to introduce the style to a wider audience has grown into a solid part of our festival. Hustle shows love to its culture and community, blending perfectly with the essence of IBE. Just check the vibe from last year here. This year the program continues to grow with a powerhouse lineup of international dancers and educators.
And There’s More Hustle at IBE on Sunday the 17th:
• Workshop (starts at 13:00* at Cypher One) with Hustle pioneers T-Boy (SVK) & Inga Be (GBR) (beginner friendly, no partner needed)
• A panel talk (starts at 16:00* at Cypher Three) featuring T-Boy, Inga Be, and NYC’s own Abdiel, diving into the rich history, challenges, and evolution of Hustle culture
• But that’s not all! We’re pulling up with a full van of Hustlers, including Chewi and Abdiel from NYC, and Mogwai from Paris.
Why HustleMatters
Hustle is more than a partner dance; it’s a space for connection, expression and community.Whill street styles often focus on solo dancers, Hustle offers a space to lead, follow, surrender, and connect with each other. At IBE, hustle stands alongside other street styles that have shaped dance culture from the ground up.
Join the festival and learn the steps, share stories, dance together, and build connections between nationalities, generations, and scenes.
