The Notorious IBE and Brazil
The strong connection between The Notorious IBE and Brazil began with the festival’s editions in São Paulo in 2011 and 2016. Since those pivotal events, IBE and Brazilian breakers continue to celebrate their shared passion for music, dance, and hip-hop culture. This bond grows stronger each year, as more and more Brazilian dancers make the journey to Heerlen.
The start of the flip-flop battle
In 2018, Pelezinho (BRA), Tyrone (IBE), and Lilou (FRA) created the Havaianas Battle, also known as Batalha de Chinelo. This unique battle concept requires breakers to compete in flip-flops. It’s challenging, often resulting in flip-flops flying through the air, much to the audience’s delight. This distinctive element of Brazilian culture has become one of the festival’s highlights.
Bonnie & Clyde
The Batalha do Chinelo at The Notorious IBE this year is going down Bonnie and Clyde style! As if trying to keep your flip-flops on by yourself wasn’t wild enough, now breakers have to do it in pairs! Hosts Pelezinho (BRA) and Lilou (FRA) will invite the first four couples. The other four spots will be up for grabs through a cypher qualifier judged by three judges (t.b.a.). These eight Bonnie and Clyde duos (one guy + one girl) will face off in battles where each breaker gets one round.
The goals
Keep those flip-flops on! Blow the judges’ minds. If one flip-flop is lost, the partner can still save the day. A duo is only out if both partners lose one or both flip-flops in the same battle.
In the final round, each breaker gets two rounds. The flip-flop rules still stand! DJ Nobunaga will be on the decks. MCs Pelezinho and Willy (NLD) will bring the energy to the crowd.
